Ok, so i decided to start a new thread to discuss stators from CDI Electronics for a 1974 Johnson 85HP V4 2 stroke.

CDI Electronics is a manufacturer of ignition components for Outboard motors. They seems to have a good reputation.

This is for CDI P/N: 173-1225

Their stators only have 1 charge coil, which they state:

This stator uses a single charge coil to provide voltage for the CD module. Both the original and this replacement will test the same as regards the DVA output and resistance readings.

The OEM stators have 2 charge coils.

This is the product image (which is confusing, since the picture has 2 charge coils)

The big deal of this one over OEM is that it is $236 compared to $340+ (OEM), and it has a 2 year warranty.

However, as you know, when you go to AutoZone, or other parts warehouses for autos, when you buy the products with "lifetime" warranties, it basically means that you will be replacing it "for life."

I don't want this to be the same. If its only going to last 3 years, but the OEM will last 20, i'd rather have the OEM. But, the OEM is around $100 more.

So, does anyone have experience with these guys, and what is your opinion on buying non-OEM parts like a stator?

CDI makes some very good products, and actually they make many OEM parts which are rebranded with the OEM manufacturers banner.

The best for after market, sometimes better then OEM. If you are not sure about the correct part, call or email them.

The CDI 2 year warranty is for the part only, no labor. You have to package up the part and send it to the factory and they will determine if it is a warranty situation, then they will send a replacement. With shipping times, that could take several weeks.

The Evinrude warranty is one year and includes the labor needed to replace it. If a warranty situation, a dealer replaces it on the spot and you are on on the water right away with no charge.
