Hey guys, has anyone out there delt with a CD2USL ignition sys. this one is on a 48hp evinrude. has an intermitent problem were it won't rev out. I cleaned and adj. the carbs, rebuilt fuel pump. still same problem. Now I am thinking more electrical. they say the entire ign. system is under the flywheel.I Am thinking it is the S.L.O.W. (speed limiting overheat warning)they say that if the S.L.O.W. fails it will limit the rpm to 2000. I disconnected the overheat sensor but still same problem. if anyone has any info on this I would apreciate the feedback

Re: CD2USL ignition system

I had a simular problem with a 60 horse(1989).It turned out that it had a tiny leak in the fuel supply hose. The result was that it sucked air part of the time and this caused intermittent and later continuous low rpm

Re: CD2USL ignition system

On those CD2USL models all ignition components are under the flywheel except for the coils.

Re: CD2USL ignition system

If it ia going into SLOW, it will make a very harsh miss, ot surging sound. Turn the leads to the coils around, and see if it will move from one cylinder to the other.

Re: CD2USL ignition system

hey R Johnson it does make a harsh miss, it shakes the whole motor like it is hitting a rev limmiter.I do have a clymer manual that I have been using as reference.they said in the manuel the used the CD2USL system on 89 and 90 year model, but an earlier post said it was a 91. I did not see an external power pack. I will also try too switch plug leads, being a twin cyl. and using one coil I don't think it will make a difference. but i will try that and see what happens. thanks for the help

Re: CD2USL ignition system

Although the ignition coil look's like one , it is two coils in one potting. As you discribe the problem, I would say the engine is going into the SLOW mode. The stator on this engine is also a potted assemly, meaning all molded into one. My guess would be you need a new staor.

Re: CD2USL ignition system

hey R Johnson, let me run this by you. You can replace averything individualy, charge coil,Ign. module or the stator coil. the clymer manual says if it is going into SLOW mode replace the ign. module. the ign. module and power pack are all in one component. Would you agree. It fires right up and runs great at low speed. Thanks for your help

Re: CD2USL ignition system

I'm sorry a steered you wrong on this, the charge coil is a seperate assembly, but as you discribe the problem, it sound's like the engine is going into slow. To test the charge coil, the ohm's reading should be 900-+, or -100 ohm's. My guess is the stator going into SLOW. The best test would be a running test with a peak reading volt meter. If the engine is peaking at about 2500 RPM with a severe surge, or miss, that is SLOW
