You don't HAVE to be marine grade... just depends how long you want it to last.

Marine rated CD players have a protective coating over the circuit board & spray resistant face/controls, top brand name AUTO CD players have a protective coating over the circuit board & spray resistant face/controls. You do the math.

The biggest problem is keeping spray away from CD slot - marine or auto.

A good auto brand fitted into a marine case is o/k IMO.

Aldo

Re: Cd player.. install.? Marine?

When I replaced my old cassette player in my boat about a year ago, I found a reasonably high powered "Dual" brand in-dash automotive CD player at Pepboys on sale for $39.00. It installed real easy and works GREAT! And if I have a problem that pops up, I can just toss it and buy about 5 more before I match the price of one marine grade unit. Mine is installed in a door and left close to prevent it from being splashed. Keep in mind that I only use my boat in freshwater, and it's ALWAYS garaged and never rained on...that may make a big difference in longevity as well.

A cheap cd player is just that- cheap. It may work "great," but I find it hard to believe that it sounds great. It probably sounds decent though. You can get a good marine cd/radio for a few bills. That's not much more than a good auto cd/radio.
As far as the coating- it's not the same. As an example, Kenwood sends their units to another company for additional coatings after they are produced.
I agree a nonmarine radio will work for a while, but in the long run it WILL corrode in a salt water environment.
It's your decison to make, just make it with all the facts and weigh the risks. If I was lake use only, I would probably opt for the nonmarine unit.
