I took the old boat out today and it ran great however; I think I got cavitation a few times. I was running about 3/4 throttle, rough water and all of a sudden it was like the prop did have any water to pull from. Any tips?

Re: cavitation

in rough water very possible. did it just rev up, and then catch again. or did it rev up, and you had to slow the revs down for it to catch. what motor year hp, boat?

My Boat Does The Same Thing If Motor IS Not Trimmmed Down Far Enough In Rough Water

Re: cavitation

Lowering the engine (which trimming down does) helps and a cupped prop grips the water better and reduces ventilation.

Once the prop starts spinning it creates a vortex which feeds upon it'self and you sometimes have to change something to get it to quit.....like dump the throttle and put it back; trimming in, etc.

Re: cavitation

Mine will do the same thing when doing a fast turn with a skier or tuber on the back and also just the boat itself. I now make a habit of trimming down a little before the turn and then back up again after it.

Re: cavitation

Now that you mention it Ken, mine too. If I execute a WOT tight turn it will pick up a couple hundred or so rpm's which it gives back to me a few seconds after I straighten out. If I don't want to play, I do as you do or cut the throttle somewhat and it doesn't happen.
