I have a 115 Yamaha with which the corner of the cavitation plate has broken off. I've experienced no loss of performance, and it seems to get up on plane just fine as well as make easy turns at all speeds.

I was thinking of pruchasing a Hydrofoil. On my cavitation plate there were four pre-drilled holes, now after the loss there is only three. I was leaning towards the Sting Ray Hydrofoil where it has four pre-drilled holes as well to mount to the plate.

Can I get away with using only three?

Should I have this repaired prior to installation?

I assume I could have somebody weld a new corner on, but at what expense am I looking at?

Re: Cavitation Plate

It shouldnt be a big deal $ wise. Any good welding shop can do it. As a matter of fact, its not worth NOT doing it.

Good luck!

Re: Cavitation Plate

But does the lower unit need to be removed?

What is the time frame of having said work done?

I was told by one to just wait for the end of the season and have it repaired then.....

Re: Cavitation Plate

It only has to be removed if the welder cant get close to the motor. It should take about an hour - maybe two at the most. It depends on how much is gone and what it takes to cut out another piece of aluminum.

If the welding shop wants to wait until the end of the season when they are not so busy, thats OK. Dont let it stop you from enjoying your boat.

Good luck!
