Anyone here have any opinion of those type of trolling motors? I have a 19' 6" Starcraft Superfisherman. It has a 135hp Merc. I mainly use it for Canadian fishing and just would like a motor to back up and keep me in place for the most part. I really do no like the bow mounts as they take up so much room on the front when stowed. So I am considering one of these. I am thinking the 55lb thrust. Please advise. Thanks, Bob

Re: Cavitation plate trolling motor

Bought 4.5hp johnson twin , mounted to transom teak platform with vertical wood and ubolts . Trolls 2hrs at little above idle on tank on it 3/4 gal , I/O lower unit steers boat130hp.gif.
Its on the passenger side . Set ups to drift good by turning sterring wheel of boat . When fishing I drive ,can turn around , fish unobstructed , Idle up to slow down drift when windy and move slowly back to area with out firing up the mercruiser. It would
weight less than trolling motor ,batt . I'm am not shure that mine will get me back off great lakes if to windy with 18'6' boat.

Bow mounts take up very little space. They should be mounted so the motor lays along the gunnel when stowed -- not mounted so it points down the middle of the boat when stowed. Far more effective for positioning than a stern mount and far more effective for trolling than any stern/engine mount. As back up propulsion, no electric troller is effective due to the limited speed and range -- unless of course you can see a cabin, resort, marina or home from wherever you intend to break down.

Seen before advertised but were 24vdc .Come out of water on plane , 2 trolling batterys in series , starting batt for boat seperate , 55lb thrust alot of power for how long with a boat that big and wind ? silent running and slow can't beat , never seen one ever on I/O or OB so if you get one I'd like to hear how it performs .

55# isn't going to be much thrust on a 19'6" boat, I'd go 80-100# I use a 70# transom mount on my 18' Crestliner for trolling and it's barely enough at times (few), a 70# bow mount works fine for positioning though.

I never liked (or had) an engine mounted TM as you can't make quick steering corrections and are limited to the steering angle of the main engine.

When I troll with the 70# transom mount I raise the main so it does not cause additional drag, can't do that with an engine mount TM.

I noticed you said you were going to use it to keep you in position, explain this a bit further. I think this would be the worst application for an EM TM.

I just want to keep it away from the rock faces and near the reefs.

If you are fishing Canadian lakes that are notorious for rocks the size of automobiles, if you kill your outboard by striking one of them, chances are you killed the AV plate motor as well. A bow mount would not be in the water at the time of the strike so you there ya go!
