cavitation plate/jack plate/in relation to bottom V point

I installed a jack plate on my boat:rolleyes:, I have heard that there is a relation between the size of the plate (offset/pushback) to where the cavitation plate should sit now in relation to the V bottom of the boat anybody heard anything about that???:confused:

I read water rises from the stern of a boat approx. 1", every 1' back, I don't know how accurate this is? but it's the only fact I've heard so far, maybe someone more knowledgable will be along to help with this ;)
