Hey, my Force 50 tends to overheat after about 15 min. of hard running, but still shoots water. The thing is, its not hot to where its pouring smoke, but hot to where it loses performance and is not touchable. The therm was jammed, so i just took it out.I dont understand what other ways these motors are cooled besides water? What other things should i look into? thanks
-Jamie

I forgot to add..The motor only seems to overheat when over 1/2 throttle. It can idle and putt around all day long and remain cool, but once i get on the throttle for ten to 15 min its starts running hot. Any ideas ?

Do a compression check. My Chrysler 75hp did the same thing. Turned out to be a blown head gasket.

Did you put in a new thermostat? or did you just leave it out? If your still getting good water circulation then you have a head problem. Does your alarm go off when over heating? Alot of times when i run mine it gets hot untill the thermostat reaches hot temp to open up, then it cools enough to hold your hand on without burning.

When did you change your impellar last? A weak impellar will not pump as well at lower speeds.

Hey Jamie, also refer to post titled, "1988 50Hp force" Thread further down the post page here.
It talks about the possibility of an obstruction, and how to troubleshoot.

....jas....

Make shure the water pump and impeller are in good condition, if the impeller hasn't been changed in over a year, please change it and also make sure that the grommet in the water pump tube is mating properly with the lower water pipe that takes the water from the water pump to the short block.

The thermostat should be replaced and a similar one has to be used. It will prolong the life of the motor and save some gas in the process.

Also make certain that the base of the pump is sealing properly with the lower unit base or water presure will be lost as it happened to my Chrysler 20 and I ended up with scratched sleeves and a sooner than ever overhaul.

Re: Causes of overheating?

The problem did turn out to be the impeller. I bought a new water pump kit(impeller+housing) for $55 and it solved the problem. My old impeller wasnt broken or beat up, it was just really stiff, where as the new one is flexible. Anyone having the same problem, change the impeller before anything. Even if the impeller looks ok, it could still be bad. Thanks for the replies..
