Fought for 25 minutes, would not come near the boat.

Then it wouldn't fit in the net when it finally did get tired.

Didn't want to kill it with the gaff so I grabbed it by the steel leader and the tail and brought it in.

Then I couldn't get the scale to stay in it's mouth to weigh it.

Took 2 hands to hold it up though.

Caught and released.

:D :D :D

I'm glad you didn't kill it just because you could. Nice job. Sharks are one of the most fascinating fish in th esea and are great fighters, very deserving of C&R if possible. I don't know that I would want to be the one removing the hook though! YIKES!!!

UFM82

Nice looking fish- must have been fun

Yes. They have a mouth full of teeth. Good job, Stiff. Did you get that in the inlet?

No not in the inlet. Got it at ICW marker 136, right where the channel makes a sharp bend toward atlantic city. There's a grassy channel that runs parallel to the marked navigation channel (and is about 5-10 feet deeper too!). That's where.

Went out the very next night, all night (midnight-5:00am) and caught..... NOTHING. OK we caught one monster sting ray, about 4 to 5 feet across, too big to get in the boat. Nothing else though. I had the same piece of bait on all night.

Nice fish but I'm not sure I want a 4' shark in the boat with me. I've seen smaller sharks beat things up.

He was tired, I grabbed his tail while my dad dragged him by and he barely tried to get away.

Looking at the pic though it was an easy reach for him to do some damage....

Re: Caught my first brown shark!

Had bad experiences pulling Blues into the boat. Only reported shark attack in my area on the Pacific was about 2 inches from being MY hand instead of the guy next to me. We gaffed it through the head and the belly to get it into the boat. It jumped off the deck about 3 feet, bit down 4 times on the guy's wrist, severing most of the tendons. He had some surgeries to repair some of it but after 10 years his hand has only about 50% strength. He was tieing the leader while I was re-baiting the hook on a Salmon trip. About exactly the size you got there. Caught several Blues that were pushing 7 ft, 180-200 lbs. Blues are gorgeous to look at out of the water, and in the water. They like to cruise the top with the fin sticking out of the water like in the movies! Sure do get pissed when they grab your 20lb Coho and snap your line as you're trying to real it in!

Re: Caught my first brown shark!

Back in the 60s before catch and release became the in thing to do we used to catch them, shoot them, drag them to the beach and cut their jaws out for mounting. I had an 8 foot bull shark come back to life on me while cutting out the jaws. He had 3 12 gauge slugs in his head and had been dragged by his tail for 5 miles. Sure woulda thought he'd been dead by then.

Nice catch! So, who was the first one to say "I think we're going to need a bigger boat"? :)

Re: Caught my first brown shark!

I've got some dogfish, at least I think they were dogfish in between the sandbars near the inlet. The largest I've caught was 5 feet, and took two guys to lift. (didn't have a scale) In the middle of the day too. They're fun on freshwater rods. :D
Whole bunch of us that run Great Bay should go out for night sharks.

Where exactly are you docked?
I'm in a lagoon off Tuckerton Creek. The one just past Sheltered Cove when coming from the bay.

Re: Caught my first brown shark!

I'm not quite sure where Roundabout Creek is but I'll look it up on a chart. Putting a new boat in this weekend and if it's all working properly I'll go looking for it. If you see a kid in a tan 18 ft. aluminum center console...
