i looked under my dock light which is in 15 feet of water and there were a bunch of shad, 9-14 inches. i threw my throw net and nothing, how do you catch these things? i tie flies and am capable of tying siv 24 flies if a certain pattern may work. Any ideas flies or not? Is it even possible to catch one on a hook?

Instead of throwing a net over them build a frame for your net and submerge it and when the prey swims over it lift it up. You could also try baiting them with cornmeal, pancake mix, potato flakes, baby cereal even works.
It's amazing the things you try when your a kid and even more amazing the things that work.

you need a real heavy net that sinks fast, we have put double lead on them before, also if you can turn the light off when you throw they cant see the shadow of the net coming toward the water. as for redhorse we catch them on nightcrawlers this time of year when we fish for walleye.

Those shad are most likely there to spawn, they won't be around for long at all.
