I know a lot of people do it and a lot don't.I like fish and keep what I want too eat. About 20 years ago while working at a dealership in Bartow FL, a professional fisherman stopped by to have some work done on his trailer.I want mention any names, but he was on his way too some local pits(lakes) too shoot a fishing show.He came back by a week later, there were about 10 bass boats that were fishing with him and they gave everybody at the dealership all the bass they wanted, If I rememder right I think he said they had 100 + bass.Funny they show catch and release on the film you watch but you don't see all the other boats with them stuffing thier livewells full.

I've heard of "culling the herd" but that is crazy stupid.

Hey, I'm a pro, I will catch all the fish and let the little people have a few. Someone oughta do a "secret documentary" on that:mad:. I wonder how many endorsements would go out the window on that.

Re: catch and releease

i always catch and release. The fishing pressure is so great with many more people out fishing that it is in the best interest to do it. Let is go for someone else to enjoy it. But then you'll always get the one that wants to cart that big one home instead of taking a few measurements and pics and having one reproduced. Then the thrill is gone for anyone else that could have caught it.
BUT, that me just being a recreational fisherman.

If you catch and actually eat then that's ok too. Wasting it is not good in any form.

I like to fish the deerfield river in western MA, the only place to catch big trout is along the no kill section. Its fly fishing only so it raises the challenge a bit. The quality of the fishing reminds me of trips I took out west.
But its not for everyone.

I catch them and then, release a sigh of relief, that once again, I wasn't skunked. :p :D

Tournaments in our area will usually give away any dead fish presented, to area food/homeless shelters, which I think is great, anything else is wrong IMO.

Most fisherman I know, keep what we catch for food. I fall into that category as well. I do prcatice catch and release with most species of fish though, usually keeping only walleye, perch, bluegill and salmon.

I wouldn't gauge current C&R on something that happened 20+ years ago. That behavior wouldn't be condoned by most/any bass clubs today. As far as we know, those ponds could be owned by some fishing company exec, stocked and raised to make good fishing shows.

I catch, photo, and immediate release (no sitting in live-well) almost all fish. I will keep the occasional deep hooked walleye. But, as long as you are following your state's regulation, everything else is just religion and beliefs.

If licensed fishermen keeping legal limits puts too much of a strain on a fishery, then the limits need to be tightened up.

Pro fisherman, like polititions, celebrities, etc, perception is usually far from reality. :) In general, they are higher than the other two catagories, though. :) :)

Re: catch and releease

I can probably take a guess on who it was. They may have been on private pits and the owner wanted to remove the smaller ones to keep the population healthy, called selective harvesting. Being 20 yrs ago, that concept might not be around yet. You said ten boats, if there were 2 anglers/boat then the daily limit would be 10 fish/boat, 10 boats = 100 fish. I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Re: catch and releease

I enjoy a good feed of brook trout or lake trout from time to time, but when you read stuff like this, catch and release makes a lot of sense. The following is an excerpt from the Maine open water fishing regulations:

? Pregnant and nursing women, women who may
get pregnant, and children under age 8 SHOULD
NOT EAT ANY freshwater fish from Maine?s
inland waters. Except for brook trout and
landlocked salmon, 1 meal per month is safe.

? All other adults and children older
than 8 CAN EAT 2 freshwater fish
meals per month. For brook trout
and landlocked salmon, the limit
is 1 meal per week.

SAFE EATING GUIDELINES

Little Madawaska River & tributaries(Madwaska Dam to Grimes Mill Road):.................Do not eat any fish from these waters.

Kennebec River Augusta to the Chops:.........Do not eat any fish from these waters.

Penobscot River below Lincoln:........................................................1-2 fish meals a month.

For king mackerel 37 to 43 inches in total length:
? Adults should limit consumption to no more than one, 8-ounce meal per week.

Re: catch and releease

If I could cook as well as I fish I'd likely keep a lot more fish then I do. Right now I keep about 1-2 fish a year and return 100+ easily (Gobies not included in these stats).

I also feed a few seagulls with perch that swallow the hook and tear there swim bladder. The gulls always pick them up within 5 minutes.
