Re: catch and release

For years, I've been practicing "Shoot & Release" aka elk hunting with black powder....

We're now required to not lift native salmon into our boats: must take out the hook while the fish is still in the net, and by the side of the boat. Pretty well means that you need 2 or 3 people in the boat: one to hold the net handle, another to hold the net away from the lures, one to take the hooks out. It's an ugly scene, sometimes, especially when sea lions are in the area....then add 2 people: sharpshooters with wrist rockets.

Capn Mike, you haven't started using these www.kwikrleasehooks.com ? Hooks are made of a nickel/copper/boron alloy developed at Bell labs for semiconductors; a very small electrical current (less than 250ma) triggered by remote control and powered by the movement of the fish through the water, causes the metal to relax and straighten. Then you can just rebend it to whatever shape you prefer.

I'm surprised they aren't available in Canada yet.

Very good article!!

Just got back from Wal-Mart with a new collection of circle hooks. Have removed barbs from hooks for years.

Jtexas, your link didn't work. Google found this, tho: http://www.sheltonproducts.com/newcirclehook.html if I can't find them locally, I'll send away for them. Incidentally, I live in Washington state (pronounced with only one 'R'), so I can use US dollars.....

I think you could get them sent to you there in Baja Oklahoma, 'der. ;)
