Sweet16 --- Check the regulations where you live...you may need a permit to set up a trot line in public waters.....regs may set a time limit for how long you can leave trot line in water...how many hooks....there may be limits for the times that you can use a trot line, etc. I occasionally set up a trot line in the evening and run it through the night and then pull it out in the morning. When I was younger I used to set up "bush" or "branch" lines. Again, set them up in the evening and took them down in the morning. Running a trot line can be a lot of fun (and work). Untended or abandoned lines are a problem for other fishermen though. I have a trot line that I have used for 15 years. You can buy them already set up or make your own. Again check the rules in your state.

Re: cat fishing

***...continued from last post (hit the wrong button)....Use good fresh bait (regs prohibit some bait)...I use cut bait or nightcrawlers sometimes both... use good strong hooks (don't want to lose any fish. After I set my line I wait about an hour to check it the first time....you can just lift it up from near the first hook and you will know if you have any fish on....you do want to check and rebait regularly (no bait, no fish)...also a catfish on an untended line can tangle the rest of the line...I clean the fish after I run the line each time (keeps you busy while waiting to check the line again). running a trot line is a lot of fun and work. the reward is the cooking and eating. Good Luck.

sweet, don't know where you live, but here in Kentucky you can run trot lines as long as you do not leave them unattended for over 24 hours.<br />Kinda dumb cause you don't want to.<br /><br />If you run one across anywhere that a boat might happen by, make sure you put a weight on it to keep it down on the bottom.<br />Don't take a lot, just some.<br /><br />There are all kinds of bait you can use from live bait which I prefer to cut shad or any other cut bait.<br /><br />Also might want to check into jugging which is a lot of fun and you can stay busy all night chasing and rebaiting up to a 100 jugs.<br /><br />Again, live bait or cut bait for these.<br /><br />Use no less than 50# leaders and some really good swivels.<br />That helps in keeping down the mess they can get in when a fish gets on and goes to twisting trying to get off.<br /><br />If you ever see a 1 gallon jug disappear with a very loud pop, your heart will almost stop.<br /><br />Then you can honestly say, "FISH ON"<br />Good luck and have fun.
