I have a ~7+ year old Maine Coon, who can't really jump anymore. I noticed yesterday when he tried to jump onto my lap and couldn't get high enough so he sunk his claws into my leg as he fell backwards, he has been attempting to jump onto the bed and couch with no success, we end up picking him up. He walks with a slight limp, but he doesn't seem to be into pain when we pick him up and touch him around the legs. Other than seems fine, any suggestions?

Shock collar. Cattle prod. Both effective jump stimulators for cats.:facepalm::D

Or look at foods with Glucosamine, it helps greatly with joint health in older critters...

If he's limping he may have injured himself somewhere. Our 7 month old Boxer decided to play surfboard down our stairs with the cat.
Guess who was the surfboard. Cat limped quite badly so we had xrays done, he blew some ligament in his knee. He's better now.
Maybe it is something like that? Seven years old is pretty young for a cat to have age related problems. You'd have to rack up a vet bill to find out for sure.

Just last year we had the same issue with out 10 year old cat. All of a sudden he was having trouble on the steps and jumping up on things. Took him to the vet and they determined he had hyperthyroid. Apparently very common. We give him a tiny pill in a treat every day now and he's right as rain.

:)Hey hostage my cat is 16 now, he doesn't jump up on the front poarch rail like he used to. I think it's eather age or loss of confidence. The limp your cat has sounds like that is one of the problems, but i'm no cat Dr. my is helping me work on my 74 lund and trailer every day, sometimes too much if you know what i me1 later.

I highly recommend Synovi G3.

I credit it with actually extending the life of my dog. She lived to 15 years and I think the last 5 were only possible with the help of G3.

Re: Cat can't jump?

I had a cat that lived to be 21 1/2 years old, the last 2 1/2 years of her life I built a ramp for her to get on the bed at night and the 30 gal fish tank was her water bowl so I had to build a set of steps so she could get up on top to drink water, and no she did not eat the fish, she would actually play with them through the glass. I say this to tell you to take your cat to the vet, at 7 he should be able to jump most any place he wants to.

I think cats have a hard time accepting that they're gettin old.Ive seen alot of symptoms!.I hope its nothing serious.if it is age they do adjust to it usually. It wont hurt to make a step or ramp if needed.Ive done it for dogs too.Humans can have the same symptoms!!

Re: Cat can't jump?

Seven isn't even middle aged for a cat. Medicating him without a Vet's counsel could be very bad. Get him to a Vet.

My dear departed Catzilla was 14 and dying of cancer, but still jumped on the bed every night at bedtime to rub her chin on my beard. That included her last night on earth.

My current cat, Miss Kitty, is 20 and doesn't jump on the bed any more, but she only stopped in the last year or so.

Your cat has an injury or a disease. Get him to a Vet.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. :)

Re: Cat can't jump?

i'm with the take your cat to the vet crowd. i too think 7 is too young for a cat not to be able to get wherever it wants to go. something must be up..

fwiw. my cat has been having similar problems. but my cat is 14. just this last year or so has his jumping on top of things slowed...

hope ya can find a way to help your friend out.
