looking at buying a sea ray with either a 4.3 with carb or another one with mpi. I,ve been told to buy the carb unit because of less problems and easier to repair. I'm not worried about the hp. I would welcome comments. have a 95 5.0 with carb now and been doing my own repairs. <br />thanks bob

Well let see one you must pump the throttle several times and start it, Hope the choked closed and then reopeans as it warms up. If that works still must warm up for 5 minutes before you can trust it to back away from the dock.<br /><br />The other you turn the key and it starts put it in reverse and back off the trailer. It starts quicker, idles smother, gets better gas mileage, and has more power. The engine adjust for the best gas mileage and performance every second it running. Buy the MPI.

Ever wonder why you can't buy a carbureted car anymore? About 90% of the population would not understand how to start it. FI is the only way to go.

bobder41, you said you have been doing your own repairs on your carburted engine. If you feel you can do the work on the MPI to troubleshoot it, and carry the equiptment and parts to repair it on the water get the MPI.<br /><br />Boatis, if it doesn't start when you go to back it off the trailer you only have an wasted day, if it doesn't start or quits 40 miles offshore and you can't fix it it could get a lot worst than just a wasted day. If you boat on small inland lakes where help is close by the MPI is fine, call the tow service, but if you go very far offshore I like it to be as simple as possible to fix a problem and get home.

thanks for the help, ? does the mpi units use the same test equipment as a mpi chevy or does mercruiser use its own version and test eqipment

While both chevy and merc's ECM's are manufactured by Delphi, they have different inside architecture and programming. While I have not tried all of them (ok, just a few) the cheap automotive scan tools will not work on Merc. The more expensive ($2000 and up) units will read them with the right adapter. The Merc specific scan tool from Rinda Technologies is around $500 and will work on all Mercs. What year boat are you looking at ?

The sea rays are 2005 boats, i have a 95 206 Monterey with a 5.0 mercruiser in it with 170 hrs on the boat. <br />I am deciding on either buying the new boat or replacing the deck and cushions on the monterey.<br />The previous owner would allow people to sit on the cushions and bucket seats soaking wet causing the problem to the deck and cushions. The boat has also been garage kept.<br />Thanks <br />Bob
