Carry outboard by the handle?

Sorry another stupid newb question.

My user manual for my 3.5 mercury say to carry the outboard only in standing position or on the side

But can I use the handle to carry it like in the picture ?

If I listen to the user manual, using the handle to carry it will lead to a oil leak, but in fact the handle is here for that, no?

What do you think about that?

Thanks a lot.

vildric, exactly how can there be an oil leak if the lower foot is sealed? :noidea:

The issue the manual is worried about is oil and gas from the power head, not the gearbox.

Carried as pictured some gas from the carb might leak out. Generally not too big of a concern but it can be a bit messy and you certainly don't want it stored in that position.

It's a 4 stroke so oil could leak if it's not transported and stored properly.

vildric - I don't think this Mercury motor has a carrying handle like the Yamaha in the picture. You don't want to use the tiller to carry 17 KG. Can you use your trolley from the other thread so you don't carry the motor as much?

Okay that does make a difference. Once again I didn't see the 4 cycle part. :sorry:

I just remembered from vildric's other thread, he didn't say in this one, GM.

Just on the merc site .First thing you see in the portable section is a 4 stroke laying on its side on the dock!So if and I mean if you have a carry handle like the first pic its perfectly fine to carry it like that.Have to admit its really hard to see weather theres a handle or not in their pics of the 3.5.

Merc's picture - No real handle. I don't know if the recess above the 3.5 is meant for carrying or just design. :noidea:

Thanks all for the answers.

The problem is that I dont have a trailer so I put my canoe or 12' boat on my truck roof, the outboard in the trunk, so I need to carry the outboard to the truck, and then to the water. Its a bit of a mess to carry it on the side and the trolley where I store it is too big for my truck.

There is an handle but on the other side, I dont know if its there for another reason or if its really a carry handle.

Here is a picture (not mine) of what I'm talking about, really looks like a handle...

I didn't find a picture of the tiller side. Yep - That's the handle, so carrying will be easier.

keep it upright as much as possible.

Take the cover off and look for where oil/gas might come out when its laid on side, front or back. When laying it in the trunk have it lay so the least can leak.

Use rags to catch the leaks.

Check the oil and top it up before starting on the lake. (should have set upright a few min while loading the boat)

Its the best you can do...

Should not be a problem in the truck, as the manual say that I can store it on the side. My issue was really to carry it on the water. Thanks for your help, I'll use the handle but I'll take care to keep it as upright as possible.
