i was wondering if a person would have to buy the special bunk carpet or if they could just use regular boat carpet. i know they sell carpet in strip thats for bunks but im wondering if its any different from interior carpet for boats. also what is the best way to attach that carpet to the wood bunks glue or nails. one more thing has anyone heard anything good about those little pads you screw onto the bunks that make it slide better.

Re: Carpet?

Save your money and just get indoor/outdoor carpet from the local hardware store. The cheaper the better. Attach it with heavy duty staples.

Some people put nylon strips on top to help the boat slide off and on. Or, some people spray WD-40 or soap on the bunks after they launch every 5th or 6th time.

Re: Carpet?

My glastron's trailer has some gold shag carpet on it. :D I'm guessing it's been there since the '70s, so pretty much any carpet will last you plenty long enough.

Re: Carpet?

I have the ones that Realgun suggests and the are great. They are a little pricey compared to carpet but I think that its worth the cost. :D

<Have you looked into these ? I am thinking they will last a long time.>

Hey there, that's a great link! I like that ultimatebunkboards.com site... Lots of good stuff in there.

You should see my old relic boat trailer:
http://members.aol.com/ammonc/boatyard.jpg

This is my old 1975 Sea Star, 17' trihull with a 165hp Mercruiser I/O. The trailer is a generic solid heavy steel trailer that was once gray primer, then white, then black. It has 8 foot 2x4 bunks with black indoor/outdoor carpeting. I replaced the carpet two summers ago and tacked them on with real heavy duty staples. They are still holding up great.

Butch

Re: Carpet?

The slick strips tell you not to use them on aluminum boats. Ofcourse this is inside the package, and you get to read it after you get it home and open it.

Re: Carpet?

Home Depot sells a brand of staple that doesn't rust. Sorry, but I can't recall the name.

I have two bunk trailers and have found silicone spray works great for easy launch and load. Reapply ever couple of months and you're good to go. Just remember NOT to unhook the bow strap before you're ready to launch (over water)... :D

Re: Carpet?

For no rust use monel staples. Better than stainless steel.
