Re: carpet replacement

People do it all the time. Just have to clean all the carpet and glue off the floor of the boat. Thats a pain to do but possible. I think it's easier to put carpet back down. I have done it twice in my bass boat and it's not to bad once you get the pattern down. Also with bed liner it gets very hot to walk on in the summer time.

Check out Durabak or Kiwi Grip. Members have successfully used both.

Re: carpet replacement

in a couple weeks i will be replacing my carpet with a deck paint by glidden and a rubber non slip grit additive called softsand. here's a couple links...

http://www.softsandrubber.com/softsand.html

my boat is a pale green color in true 70's styling, so i will use a white deck paint with seafoam green softsand. the softsand link shows a picture of that combination. i'm going to start a restoration thread next week after i get started with my project so look for pictures there once i get the deck paint step.

Re: carpet replacement

I just redid all my floor carpet. It is quite the project, but worth it in the end if you prefer carpet. (which I do) Bed liner would work, but I am sure there are cheaper and better alternatives for boats. I would check out some of the links the previous people posted.

Would not use the soft sand. It wears out pretty quick, we use it on wingwalks on aircraft. carpet would do better, just when you use the old carpet as a patern, cut new carpet 2 inches larger and trim to fit. not a big project. mine is a 96 model and i see no reason to replace.

Re: carpet replacement

keep in mind not only is it going to make your feet hot but that heat is going to rise and make the overall temp of the area MUCH hotter

if you need a real life example find a large black parking lot and stand on it in a hot day for a bit then go stand on some grass you can really tell a difference

Re: carpet replacement

herculiner comes in white (amongst other colors), so you don't have to worry about the whole burning asphalt analogy. it's a do-it-yourself roll on bedliner material similar to rhinoliner. do a google search and read some reviews. its 80 - 90 a gallon in black and about 120 a gallon in other colors. 2 gallons would cover my 16 footer. the reason i'm leaning toward a deck paint with a non slip additive is price. i know, i know, you get what you pay for. i'm gonna try it anyway though and if it wears out in a year, i'll post about it in a year. ;)

The first time i did it i used indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot and it lasted about 4 years of heavy use on front deck. The back deck still looked good. When i replaced it the second time i used good boat carpet (High fiber count) it has now lasted 5 years and still going strong.

my buddy just used indoor/outdoor carpet on his casting deck on his jon boat.It looks good but he is having a hard time keeping it glued down. He has used three diffrent types of glue from lowes including 3m spray adhesive but his deck is homemade out of wood. What kind of glue did you use on fiberglass? If i can get 5 years out of carpet ill prob go that way cost isnt my issue i just didnt want to have to redo it that often.

Re: carpet replacement

I used Henry 663 indoor out door glue. I put it down with a notched trawl then placed the carpet over it. The trick is don't stand on it till the glue is dried,(next day) The glue will soak through the carpet if you do. I have never had a problem with it pealing up anywhere.
