I recently purchased a 1965 Johnson 18 hp, with what appears to be a fairly new carb and fuel pump. I have gone through and cheched everything I can think of (including cleaning the carb), but I the motor doesnt want to stay running unless it is choked. Mixture has to be closed all the way too. There are a couple of holes on the side and top of the carb the when I cover them, it seems to help a little. I can fix just about anything mechanical, but this ones got me stumped. Thanks in advance!

Sure sounds strange to me needing the choke indicates lack of fuel, closing the mix indicates too much fuel??.Are you sure it is the correct carb?
With the carb inverted the upper surface of the float(bottom when inverted)should be level and flush with the gasket surface.float drop should be 1 1/2 " measured from gasket surface to top of float.Be sure float has no leaks.
And of course work with a nanual.

Thank you very much for responding! I decided to go out and give the carb another cleaning. I found one little passage that was clogged. I cleaned it, and now the engine performes great! I do appreciate the advice, and I will change the float(it is cork). I guess it wasnt a bad purchase for a 18hp Johnson AND a 3.5 horse Mariner for $150. Im sure I will be asking questions about the Mariner soon. It has lots of rust and varnish in the tank, and god only knows what else. Thanks again!!!! :D
