Re: Carburetor Kit for 20HP 1980 Tohatsu
I have never worked on a 20 of that vintage. Assuming it's a standard setup, like modern units, the job is pretty straightforward... drop the LU, unbolt the pump housing from the top of the LU, and change out the impeller (and cup and wear plate if needed).
This item is a normal maintenance piece. Needs to be replaced year or 3, depending on the kind of service the motor sees. So looking for a used impeller is a bad idea. If you do find one, it's likely NG anyway.
There is a possibility that the impeller interchanges to a different model. Short of having a parts catalog, or the impeller in hand while at the parts shelf, it's impossible to speculate.
Many OB's suffer from a stopped-up telltale tube from time to time, especially if used in salt water. Just because the "pee tube" isn't flowing does not mean that the motor is not pumping. You can clear most stoppages in the telltale with a stiff wire.
Still, sooner or later -- likely sooner -- you will need an impeller.
