Hi guys, I need to find a Carburetor kit to suit a 1980 Tohatsu Outboard motor its a 20HP. Serial# is 26778 model # M20A2.

Any suggestions where I might get one? Can someone point me in the right direction. It will need to be mailed to Sydney Australia as well.
Thanks in advance

I think your out of luck.

So do you think or do you know im outta luck? Being the Tohatsu guru I reckon you'd probably know yeh?

What if I cant get a kit, what do i do just get rid of the motor? Something I particularly didn't want to do if you know what I mean.

There are possibilities. A dealer may have old stock on the shelf. Or you may be able to get a whole carburetor, either new or used. Otherwise, you may be able to get a carb rebuilding shop to match up parts as needed.

With a statistical certainty I can say you are never going to find a carb kit or a new carburetor. It's possible, though unlikely, that you might find a 30 year old engine you could rob parts off of. This model was produced in very small numbers and parts are non existent for it.

I had a go at firing up the old beast on the weekend, and I can get it to run but it quickly runs out of fuel. NOW that I got it running I checked to see if it was pumping water and GUESS WHAT, the bloody thing is NOT pumping.

This motor still has bucket loads of life in it, but the thing won't pump water now, and Im knowing that I can't get parts for it is a damn shame hey.

How hard is it to put another water pump in it, if I can get one at a wreckers?

I have never worked on a 20 of that vintage. Assuming it's a standard setup, like modern units, the job is pretty straightforward... drop the LU, unbolt the pump housing from the top of the LU, and change out the impeller (and cup and wear plate if needed).

This item is a normal maintenance piece. Needs to be replaced year or 3, depending on the kind of service the motor sees. So looking for a used impeller is a bad idea. If you do find one, it's likely NG anyway.

There is a possibility that the impeller interchanges to a different model. Short of having a parts catalog, or the impeller in hand while at the parts shelf, it's impossible to speculate.

Many OB's suffer from a stopped-up telltale tube from time to time, especially if used in salt water. Just because the "pee tube" isn't flowing does not mean that the motor is not pumping. You can clear most stoppages in the telltale with a stiff wire.

Still, sooner or later -- likely sooner -- you will need an impeller.
