Carburetor jet question

I am cleaning and troubleshooting the carburetor on my 2000 mercury 25 hp 2 stroke. I am not experienced at all but mechanically handy. Anyway, as I look in from the float bowl I notice the center tube of the jet is not centered, it's firmly against the side of the surrounding tube. Is this normal or has it been bent? Thank you for your experience.

Not a problem. They never are. It's just a metering tube, location dosn't matter.

That's good to hear. I'm glad I asked before I tried to straighten it out. It kinda looked like it was supposed to go in the middle of the brass nut that holds the bowl on. Thanks again for your definitive answer.

Re: Carburetor jet question

As much as I thought from the pristine appearance inside the carburetor I was probably on the wrong track, it made a big difference. The symptoms were bogging out completely on acceleration and dying out on idle. It would run ok with the choke applied but naturally would load up and smoke what seemed to be half raw gas. I chased the tiny ports out with a welding tip cleaner set, put a new gasket and diaphram kit in, cleaned and reassembled it. I have only tested it in the tank but I'm delighted to say it's definitely idling and accelerating properly now, without choking it. It still jitters on idle but I think some new plugs may smooth that out. I can't relay how valuable this forum is in a region with few truly experienced boat guys. Thanks for the help, I may have more questions after a lake test.

How much did you pay for your rebuild kit...? Just wondering/comparing. I just rebuilt mine on my 97 25hp Merc. I also rebuilt the fuel pump and motor end of of the fuel line connector. It stalls out at high speed for some reason...

Re: Carburetor jet question

I had a similar problem... turns out, the ethanol in the newer fuels dissolve the rubber lines, rubber seats on the float bowl needles, etc.... which then flows thru the system, thru the filter and lodges in the small orifices in the carburator where it solidifies and cause these problems... you can rebuild the carb and if you still use the ethanol blended fuels, it'll persist and you'll have the same problem in the near future. I actually cut the fuel line and primer bulb open to see he was telling the truth... the bulb and fuel line were melted and rubber was dripping off. Once I flushed the system and replaced the lines and fuel tank, it ran great. No problems since. He also said that B.P. "Premium" is the fuel to use. I found that our local Mobil station has "NON-Ethanol" fuel for sale.... I ran it since and haven't had a problem since. Hope this helps.
