I have a 1987 Force 85hp and on the float where it connects to the body of the carb is a small spring can anybody tell me the purpose of that spring except for being a pain to get back together? Thanks

Re: Carburater Question

The spring is on some model carbs and not on others. It is a counterbalance for the float to help keep it from sticking open. I have never tried to run these carbs without it. Although some carbs do not have this spring, my take is: If the carb engineers thought it was needed, then I will use it.

It is not really that difficult to get back on. Use another carb as a model to see which way the spring goes--if you did not disassemble all three at once. If you did, just orient the spring so it tends to push up the float.
