The spring is on some model carbs and not on others. It is a counterbalance for the float to help keep it from sticking open. I have never tried to run these carbs without it. Although some carbs do not have this spring, my take is: If the carb engineers thought it was needed, then I will use it.
It is not really that difficult to get back on. Use another carb as a model to see which way the spring goes--if you did not disassemble all three at once. If you did, just orient the spring so it tends to push up the float.
