I have a 1990 4.3l omc with a rochester 2 barrell carburator. the engin will not stay running unless you are constantly working the throttle. It will not idel at all but it will run forver if you keep working the throttle. Is this a carburator issue?

Re: carburater help

Sure sounds like it. Probably the idle circuit in the carb is plugged up. Each time you give it gas, it runs on what the accelerator pump squirts into the carb.
Complete rebuild is in order.
Have you checked and changed your water seperating fuel filter lately?

Re: carburater help

thanks for the reply, yes i checked and it looks good. I am able to idle the engin down by forcing the choke valve almost closed. Is this normal? Thanks

Re: carburater help

By closing the choke valve you are forcing the carb to pull fuel throught the main circuit. This is, as Don said, sounding like a clogged idle circuit. Pull the carb, strip it, clean it with proper carb cleaner, blow it out with DRY air and re-assemble, using the manual to give the correct specs (float levels, choke pull down ect)... Also don't just 'check' the filter, replace it....
