Carbuerator cough?..

When I start the boat I can hear a distinctive sound that sounds like "air leak in a can", actually you can tell whenever the piston is in the up position. Is this a basic carb adjustment or a minor carb rebuild or is it something big?

Might be an exhaust leak, check your manifold bolts for tightness. An exhaust leak will pulse with the engine rpm, and sound like anything from a tick-tick-tick to a psst-psst-psst or worse depending on how loose the manifold is or how blown the gasket is. And chances are if you have a leak you will need a new gasket.

Does this sound like it is coming from the carb? If it does, do a compression test. possible it is a bad intake valve, or could be an intake valve stuck open.

Well you just described what it is doing and I did put a exhaust and head gasket on but it has been since April. Since it is old, some bolts are getting lose, maybe I didn't torque it properly, I need to rebuild the carbs anyway, thanks for the input! You helped!
