carefully chip away at the biggest chunks, then try "spray gasket remover" in a can. Leave it sit for 10 minutes with a good coat, then rinse off at you neighbourhood carwash.....

If your mech shop dosent want to tank it first I would be looking for another one to do my work. Who wants to do that type of work with a dirty block? M

it has rubber hoses on the inside of the block, they run water around the cyllinders.
Tanking it would ruin them and so would baking it.

Koltar

the rubber hose deflectors come out and go in easy..........if thats all thats holding you back from cold tank cleaner.
Use liquid dishsoap as a lubricant to reinstall them.....

Rubber hoses, thermos and such should always be replaced in an overhaul. Most don't amount to much costs but can go a long way. Think of it as you want your motor as close to new as possible.

Rob
