Carb tuning a 1986 Yamaha 50ELJ

Where is a good starting point to set the needles before tuning the carbs after rebuilding them?

That factory manual that others have strongly recommended will have that information. I've downloaded factory manuals for every outboard I've ever owned. I think you can download it from the manufacturers website. My Yamaha 115 factory manual gives the starting point for all adjustment screws, so I'm guessing that will be the case for your motor too.

I've also found shop manuals for many outboard motors at my local public library and have used the copier to print the needed pages like tune-up procedures and specs to have on hand when needed.
