Hello,

I have a post for a 4.3 with loss of power in WOT .I am only reaching 2300 RPMS. I can rev it out of the water on the trailer over 5000 rpms just fine.
I removed the carb and checked it for possibly a bad secondary operation. When I opened the fuel bowl, I found a soft gray material on the bottom of the carb. I immediately thought it was a bunch of garbage but the carb was rebuilt by a professional rebuilder last June and has been in business since 1977. The garbage turned out to be epoxy and once removed the bottom of the fuel bowl was pitted and has small holes in it so the epoxy sealed the fuel bowl from leaking.I took it back to the rebuilder and he gladly took the carb back and is working on getting me another rebuilt one to me be the middle of the week.
Is this a practice within the carb rebuilding industry??
Chuck Neste
Atlanta, GA

I think the guy should have told you about it, and then told you your options. Just my opinion!

It is general practice to seal these with epoxy. Especially if it is a Rochester, thats entirely normal to have epoxy on the bottom of those wells on the underside of the carb.

This was a 2 barrel mercarb and the epoxy was lifting. They sealed it because the bowl was pitted and obviously rusted before they worked on it.(from the inside of the carb) It had several small holes that rusted through causing gas to drip and accumalate on the hot intake manifold. I think that is a definite No NO. They took the carb back to rebuild it again after 13 months. The 12 month warranty issues was not discussed .

VIPZACH,Yeah, I can see the guy now asking me, Do you want the crappy carb that we had to goober up to seal it from the rust or do you want a clean, like new carb that all it needs is a kit????? People are not honest as you might think. Money does weird things to people.*LOL*
Chuck

Lets see, USCG and your insurance will not pay out if a non marine carb is used. Holes with epoxy is no longer a marine carb. In a lawsuit. I am positive. Junk those holies.

I have gotten the rebuilder to give me another carb even though its 25 days over the 1 year warranty. They admitted to using an epoxy and was suprised it lifted.( rigged carb).

Did you own the boat when this was done? If not maybe the prior owner had them do that to save a few bucks. I have heard of people doing this before

the only place you should see epoxy is on the bottom of the metering wells, there shouldnt be any just spackled to cover pits anywhere, and it definitely should not be lifting anywhere.

This was a $260 rebuilt carb. my old core was in better shape. You never know until you open one up. The float bowl was resone in a epoxy becuase of the rust and pitting. The epoxy when removed showed small pen tip size holes. It must be a common practice with this rebuilder ( Carburetor specialist in the Marietta, GA Area). He will give me another one but...

Picked up my free reconditioned carb from the rebuilder. No money involved after being out of warranty. This was a totally different one. Installed it tonight and went for a test drive. All ok.
