Carb Rebuild

I am in the process of rebuilding the carbs on my 1971 50 hp evinrude. I have followed the repair manual as best I can but I am not able to remove the high speed orefice(s). The manual suggests using a jet removal tool or suitable alternative. What would a suitable alternative be? Also it seems like I have way too many parts left over from the rebuild kit I bought, is that normal. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Carb Rebuild

3 years ago I did my 1972 50 HP carbs. I too had parts left over. I did pull the high speed orifices with an over sized screwdriver....

Joe

Re: Carb Rebuild

I don't think that I would be able to get an oversized screwdriver through the opening. I have tried it with smaller screwdrivers but I am afraid of applying too much pressure and breaking it. Does the high speed orecific come with the rebuild kit? There is a little plastic piece with the kit but doesn't look like the piece I am trying to remove.

Sealyons...what you can do is grind down the sides of a larger screwdriver to fit into the drain plug hole for orifice jet removal. Main thing is to get a blade thick enough to fit the slot in the jet.

The little white piece you found is the low speed needle bearing. Look down in the hole the needle goes into and you will probably see the old one. To remove, take a thin piece of stiff wire and bend a SMALL hook in the end. Shove it through the old bearing and snag it out.

To put the new one in, slip it over the end of the needle, push it in and screw the needle in till it GENTLY seats, then screw it back out.

Orifice jets don't come with the kits.

OBJ that is something I have often wondered, if orifice jets don't come with the kits what is the purpose of removing them like the manual says? Why not spray them with cleaner in place? Am I missing something?

Re: Carb Rebuild

I'll go back and replace the LS needle seats, didn't show in the manual! I cleaned the orefice jets with cleaner and they appear to be clear. Can I assume that they will be fine and just leave them alone rather than wrestle with removing it?

Re: Carb Rebuild

Yeah...if you can't get them out without causing damage, just blow through them real good with carb cleaner and follow up with air. You can take a good strong flashlight and and pretty much tell if they are clean.

EDIT: Gatormike....always good to remove them for cleaning. It's easier to clean them when they are out especially if they are really gunked up. I have, on occasion, taken tip cleaners to get the gunk out.
