I plan on rebuilding the carb on my 1975 johnson 50hp this spring, as I don't know the maintenance history for this motor. I am fairly sure it has never been done, and has been running rough this season.
1) What parts, and how many, should i order.
2) Where can I get a rebuild kit(s)online.
3) Are there any special tools needed to do the job
4) What should I use to clean the carb once I get it off?
5) Any hints or tips that I won't find in my shop manual?
6) Anything I should look for once i'm in there that could spell trouble or the need for further repairs?

Thanks all!

Re: carb rebuild question

You will need 2 carb kits.

OEM carb kits come with new floats...the ones that Mercury supplies do not.<---generally not a problem anyway.

There is a problem lately with asking ?'s like where can I buy. As a member of Iboats, we are not allowed to disclose that kind of info.

You do not need special tools for the work.

Make sure you remove all the welsh plugs, clean and blow out the chambers before installing the new welsh plugs

Decarb spray will work fine to clean the carb once it is apart, also compressed air is a huge help.

You may contact me Via email if you have further ?'s

TMD

Re: carb rebuild question

medic,
You can order a carburetor kit that has all the rebuild parts in it.
Your NAPA dealer can get the kit for you or there are several places you can order them on line. Here's one.

The Shad Connection

Basic hand tools are all that's required (screwdriver, end wrenches, large hammer, etc.
An aerosol can of carb cleaner and a can of compressed air should do the trick as far as cleaning.
I would recommend you not remove the fixed orfices. They might come out with a screw driver but there is a special tool made for that job. You can clean those with the long tube that comes with the carb cleaner, then just blow them out with compressed air.
Cleaning and rebuilding carbs is not a big, complicated job. Just follow the manual and you'll be ok. If you have a problem or question, lettus know.

g'luck & c/6
Hooty

Re: carb rebuild question

Look like "Freeze" plugs from a car. About the size of a quarter and usually silver.

Re: carb rebuild question

The reason the welsh plugs are removed it to open the channels to blow compressed air through. If you are not in the habbit of removing them..atleast do the top one, as this is where the low speed jet sends the fuel through to the engine. I have seen deposits in them, and around them.

TMD
