I just rebuilt my carbs and before I put them back on the engine I have a concern about the jet adjustment. All the jets in both carbs were screwed in tight and after cleaning them I put them back the same way. Is this right? Not having done a carb rebuild before I'm hesitant about this. Can it be as easy as set and forget? I'd hate to have to pull the carbs off again to get to the ones inside the bowl. The high speed jets are meant to be adjusted and are easy to get to. All readings here say to back them off a number of turns??????
This is a new to me motor and I've never herd it running. I had it winterized and looked over by a reputible nearby merc dealer and they simply said the carbs need to be cleaned. Man were they right, the inside wasn't varnished but there was fine debris in the bowl and all the jets we almost completely clogged. But it ran with the jets completely seated.

Internal jets are fixed (non-adjustable) and are simply screwed in tight. External adjustments normally have a coil spring under them and are adjustable. They are idle mixture adjustments and have nothing to do with high-speed. High speed jets are fixed. In fact, depending on the carburetor, it may not even have adjustable idle mixture screws. Better read the manual again -- carefully. If this is an aftermarket manual (not a factory service manual) it may be full of errors.

No spring loaded screws anywhere that I've found. The only springs are the butterfly coil spring and a tiny little bugger on the float valve (if you want to call it a spring). No springs came with the kits either except for the little bugger. I don't have a manual yet...Just you guys!

johnson89 , I was able to pop off my linkage bar and didn't have to touch the adjustment on either carb. It should go back on as it was. I imagine that the butterflies have to open exactly the same distance to be in sync...Right? If so I can measure it with calipers. Is there a trick to this?

All - thanks for your help so far!!!

I eyeball it..go from open to closed slowly and make sure they all close at the same time..also do a lync and sync.

Synchronizing the butterflies is just one part of this procedure. Ignition timing must also be synchronized with throttle opening. Since you removed the carbs, even a slight misalignment from the original setting is enough to mess things up. Synchronization is not something you can just do part of. Starting in the middle of that procedure means you potentially screw up the previous settings. You really need a manual. That procedure is far too long to sit and type here.
