I purchased the rebuild kits for my chrysler 55hp moter for the carb and fuel pump. My question is on the fuel pump rebuild how am I supposed to do this as there were no instructions. I have a manual and it tells me to knock out the valves with a punch. Is this necessary. Any help would be appreciated.

These pumps are quite easy. Pay close attention as you dismantle...then reassemble in the revers order. And the check valves you refer to should be changed.

They are often overlooked.

TMD

Thanks Doctor

Do you know of a resource on the valves as they did not come with my rebuild kit that I got from NAPA.

Hmmm...They are the exact same brand that Mercury uses in their pumps...Although the number for the part has failed me ATM. If I was at work...I could walk right to the shelf and take them off.

So a Mercury dealer...or see if Napa can source them for you.

TMD

Marine Doctor, when you get to work, please post info on the check valves. I'd really like to change them. This may sound generic but, when I take something apart, I take a number of pictures with my Canon digital. I think it's even better than the manual.

When rebuilding the fuel pump be very careful with the press fit valve seats. When I took one out I ended up busting it and had to find a new one. If you break it I will send you the post as to where you can get them. Also I found with the NAPA pump kit the small gaskets would not fit around the seats on the spring side. You can test this by taking the seat out that is held in place by the two screws. When you take it out see if you can get the gasket from the rebuild kit to fit. I would only replace the diaphram and the diaphram gasket. Dont mess with the press fit seat gaskets. When I bought the new seats from mercruiser I also got the correct gasket when I ordered them.

The fuel seats are only 5 bucks and the gaskets are 45 cents each however the shipping was over 20 bucks.

Hey scotiany. Here is the link to get the seats you want for your fuel pump
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/SelectModelType3.asp?class_id=2
Go to chrysler then find your model number by horse power then go to fuel pumps. they have a blow up of the fuel pumps and you will find the valve seats and the gaskets you need. Make sure you order the gaskets because the ones in the napa kit dont fit. The inner diameter is too small and they break when you install them. On my fuel filter my middle seat has a brass exterior. I could not find one of these so I only replaced the press fit ones. I am sure you can use these in the center as well. I think the only reason the center one is brass is so the screws wont have a chemical reaction to the seats

Good luck

Hey eurolarva, I went to the site you posted but, they didn't show anything for a 1970 model. Who knows, maybe I won't even need them. I'm going to try to fire it up tuesday. BTW, found out Autozone does have the condenser for my model. They have a Chrysler Marine section in their parts book.

All models that appeared with the check valves used the same ones.

TMD

I agree with the doctor. My chrysler is 1967 and I had to order from a newer chrysler. The replacement was Identical. Funny. I live close to Twin City outboard and they told my you cant buy just the valve seat. They told me I had to replace the whole fuel pump.
