Either you are trolling through this group or haven't had much to do with internal combustion engines. I think the "flat disks" you are describing are the choke plates. If you've read any of these similar threads before, they all start by stating GET A SERVICE MANUAL! The manual goes through a carb rebuild step by step and most manuals include pictures or drawings to help you through the process. Carb rebuilding isn't that hard, but the manual will make it much clearer to do. What has caused you to think the carb needs rebuilt? Unless a motor has been sitting for a long time or is confirmed clogged with old fuel/oil, rebuilds aren't usually necessary. Are you sure the carbs are the problem?

Rick

i now know they are welch plugs that should not
have to be replaced,i have purchased seloc manual
and my carb is not in that book (i've called seloc
and they have yet to respond).the reason for rebuild is rough idle and stalling when i put
it into gear.

Re: carb. rebuild NEED HELP

I have the Seloc manual for that age and size of engine as I am going to be doing similar work on my '84 70 because it has been sitting a long time. I had to read that section several times before I understood it myself, but your carb is in there. There is 4 types of carbs type 1,2.... ect. In the back of the manual your year and size of engine will be listed along with a lot of other data, 1 piece of data will be which type of carb your engine has. My '84 is the type III and I assume yours is too. The manual doesn't spend much time on the type III carb because it is very similar to the type II carb. So basically you are mostly following the type II carb instructions. I think that's how it went, it was a few weeks ago that I read it.

A good tip in the manual was to take digital or Polaroid pics as you go along, then you can see how it was before you disassembled it. I will be taking the pics!

Jeff

Ditto on what Jeff said (about the polariods - or digital pics.

As for Seloc. I actually like Seloc manuals, and have both for an old Merc of mine. I find the factory manual is more accurate, but is definitely oriented toward someone who knows basics and how to troubleshoot. The Seloc is more oriented toward the amateur, I think. I have a Seloc only for my Johnson V6 but plan to get factory as well. I have found with the Merc seloc I have that the chart in the back is not necessarily accurate. It listed a certain type of carb for my engine but turns out my engine has a different carb. The difference was obvious in the pictures and diagrams, so it was no big deal, but be sure your engine makes sense with the pictures and diagrams.

Yeah D., I tried first to get the factory manual, but had no luck finding... Ken Cook was out. Everywhere else I tried they said to to Ken Cook co. ...

Seloc has LOTS of info. Huge safety section relating to all boating that had some great info. Huge section on 2 cycle engine operation in general. Great power trim and tilt section too.

Jeff
