Just curious (taking a Poll) with normal use how often do you all find it necessary to rebuild your carbs? 3 years? 5 years? Ten Years? I have a 96 50HP and it has been giving me some issues so I will be making a "rebuild" my weeknd project. Also on average, how long should each carb take to rebuild?

It depends on how well you take care of the fuel system. If you stabilize fuel prior to long term storage and periodically use a fuel system treatment like SeaFoam (and there are others) you might get by for 5 - 7 years. At that point its good preventive maintenance. Many two stroke engines are ruined because of carb problems that cause the engine to run lean at high rpm. Of course the oil injection or "ethanol blended fuel" are quick to be blamed for the failure when in fact it generally isn't. If the engine has performance issues that you think are fuel delivery related, rebuild the carbs. It's a very insignificant expense when you consider the cost of a blown engine. Once the carbs are off the engine you can clean and reassemble them in about an hour or so each.

they could maybe make it 10 years, if ya run her regularly, and don't get hold of some bad gas, I usually end up doing it every couple or three years for one reason or another. She just always seems happier with fresh rebuilt carbs.......and there's a lot worse ways to spend an afternoon. :D

Hour or so sounds about right, you could do it faster if you really wanted to, plus allow an hour or so to get her buttoned back up.

An hour of actual labor. But, don't forget the soak time once it's apart. Figure on about 3 hours on the clock with a good 2 hour break in the middle.

"No I can't do that, honey. I'm fixing a carb in here already."

Take a couple of beers with you.

There are two reasons for taking a carb apart.

To clean it because it is gunked up with dirt or gum.

To repair it because of wear or deteriated gaskets.

Lessee, my personal motor is 13 years old and is used year 'round, not just in the summer like some places. Carb has never been touched.
