So i posted several topics related to how I couldn't achieve more than 4500-4600 rpm at WOT and 30MPH on the GPS on my 1988 Force 85HP on a 17' Maxum and both the prop forum and this one, the advice was that something was wrong with the motor becuase changing between 17 pitch and 15 pitch made no noticeable difference in rpms. I went ahead and rebuilt the carbs (will never do that again) had lots of trouble and did everything by the book. The mechanic who worked on it all weekend (after not beingg able to get it runnign right) even complimented me on a job well done; however something was not right - threw on a used set of carbs after a while of tinkering, etc and the boat ran fine with some on the water adjustments he made. So took it on the water and still only gets 4600 rpm wiht top speed of 32mph so its not the carbs. What else could it be. Compression is 125 on all 3 cylinders and good spark all around. Mechanic said the motor is in real good shape and doesn't get why it won't get any better than the 4600 rpm. Says its ok and won't hurt the motor to run it this way. Anyone have any other ideas on what to try to get her up to 5000 -5200??? I am losing some top end becuase of bottom paint and piranha composite prop but could thetse to cause rpm's to be low too?

had kinda the same problem with my 85hp, i rebuilt carbs, redone all fuel lines, fuel pump diaphram & check valves, turn out it was the stator not suppling enough voltage to the mods hope this helps don
