Carb rebuild - core plug removal

I'm rebuilding the carburetor on my 1966 60 hp Johnson model VXL-12R.

My question is: how the heck do you get those core plugs out? The rebuild kit came with new ones, and I know to install them you just "gently" punch them down into the hole. But without being able to get behind the old ones to punch them out (at least not from what I can see), for the life of me I can't figure out how to get them out.

I was going to start trying to pry them out from the edge, but figured I should get some advice before I go and damage the carb body or something.

Any suggestions?

Re: Carb rebuild - core plug removal

ahh nevermind I figured it out.

OK.... how did you get them out and was it worth the trouble to replace them.

I'm rebuilding carbs for a 1984 90 hp evinrude. Got kits for both carbs and I have the core plugs and some other parts I don't recognize. I'm guessing they are under the plugs.

What I'm wondering is if the carburetor looks pretty clean already, is what ever is under the plugs worth the trouble of replacing? What is it? and how important is it?

Thx
