Hope all had a good weekend.
I took the boat out for the first time and had the following problems...need advice
1985 50hp evinrude

Took about an hour to get it running, acted like it was choking out. I used the lever in the full up position, started fine, reved up fine then died. When I finally got it started I had to leave the lever up just a smige. Once it was underway it ran great until we stopped to fish. Same problem. Took it back over to the dock and waited a half an hour or so and it fired right up but seems to be running rough.

I thought about a carb rebuild and new plugs...also there is a red lever on the right side of the engine. I moved it around but it didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference. I looked in my manual but couldn't find a reference to it...can someone tell me what it is???

Re: Carb Questions

It does sound starved for fuel, a carb rebuild may be in order, along with a decarb. Have you checked the rest of the fuel system? Air leaks etc.,.. If you pump your bulb when its dying will it pick up?

Decarb? I did check the rest of the system, no apparent air leaks. No on the bulb question. It doesnt seem to make a difference and the bulb is pretty firm.

Re: Carb Questions

I'm no expert. Just my own experience last week.

My father and I took out my "new" '85 Sylvan for the 1st time with a 50 hp Johnson. It started immediately as it had at home, but wouldn't maintain idle and stalled out. Couldn't get it re-started in numerous efforts. We pulled the plugs and they were very wet. We disconnected the gas and blew out the cylinders. Reconnected everything and it started on the first try. Had to keep the throttle up to keep it running.

Despite riding about the lake for a bit, it stalled out when we came back in at the lowest throttle position.

At home later in the week he disconnected the fuel to the carb and it ran extremely smooth (until it ran out of gas). Your carb fuel level float may not be working causing the carb to be flooding the cylinders. A carb rebuild kit is on the way. You might check this out as well.
