So I have a 1983 mercury 25. Just bought it yesterday the guy had it running fine told me the carb seemed to lose fuel while running on lake but he would pump bulb and it would keep going fine. I have now started it In my pond. The problem I'm having is when I pump bulb i watch the fuel filter to see if it fills up but it stays half full and it's like the air bypass's it and pushes gas out of hole on front of carb and from bowl it seems Please help!!!

There is no need for the filter housing to be full of fuel.

I will do that That is what it seems like That could cause it to spit gas out of carb itself though?

Re: Carb problems please help!!!

Squeezing the primer bulb too hard can raise the fuel pressure to more than the float needle and seat can hold. A firm handshake is all that is necessary.

No one mentioned that the fuel pump needs a rebuild. Squeezing the primer to keep a motor running is the first test to see if you have a fuel pump problem, if that does keep it running then order a fuel pump rebuild kit.

If you just bought the motor and not too sure of its history the a carb kit never hurts, also consider at least a water pump impeller or pump kit, and change the lower unit oil.

Carb and fuel pump kit. Any Merc dealer will have them.

Re: Carb problems please help!!!

When ordering the carb kit to rebuild the carb you will need to get a fuel pump kit as most carb kits do not have the diaphragms and gaskets for the fuel pump in them. As others have stated just because the online deals do not list complete carb kit and fuel pump kits dose not mean that they do not have them. A call to the dealer will be your best bet, and they can be ordered at the same time. If you are having to pump the primer bulb to keep the motor running then the fuel pump is going bad and can not keep enough fuel pumped to the carb or the lower crank seal could be going bad. The use of a clear plastic hose from the motor fuel connector to the fuel pump/carb will tell you if you have a air leak from the carb clear back to the tank. Once you get it all fixed you will need to remove that clear hose as it is probably not rated for fuel usage, and will get hard and crack. JMO
