Carb problem

I have a Holley 4 barrel carb on my 350 CI V8 motor and Alpha 1 Outdrive. The problem I am having is that the idle rpms will not stay at a set position. I get the motor idling at between 600 and 700 and everything shifts nice. I rev the engine a few times and the idle RPMs might come back to the set point. Sometimes it stays at 900 to 1000 rpm. When this happens the outdrive does not shift to neutral. I think it might be the linkage sticking on the carb. Can anyone give any advice as to what to look for / at? Any possible fixes?

Thanks

Re: Carb problem

Disconnect your shift and throttle linkage at the carburetor and see if the problem continues. If it does, your carb is sticking. If it doesn't, your throttle/shift cables are sticking.

Re: Carb problem

Throttle return spring, I like to use the holley dual springs 1 inside the other, to strong of spring can wear out the throttle shaft bushing, too weak and unreliable idle speed, next time it happens check to see if the throttle lever has reached the stop screw.

Even though I/O's have a throttle cable and "cruise control" if you will, you still need that return spring, It seems like you wouldn't need one and maybe you don't i don't know for sure, but there is one on my OMC Holley it seems to make up for any slop in the cable.

When in doubt, look at the illustrated parts breakdown (parts manual).
I haven't seen one listed.

I'll be darn no return spring shown, previous owner must have put it on mine and it did look like hardware store spring, I replaced it with a holley spring, I'm wondering now if I should take it off, but then again if the cable ever broke or link pin came out then I may be glad that return spring was there.
