Ref: 1985 Johnson 150, J150TLCOS.<br /><br />I plan to order the 7046V Carb Kits but I notice the small aluminum tags on the 3 carbs all differ and am wondering if that is a concern. They are numbered as follows:<br /> Upper: 393773 MX 15AK<br /> Middle: 393774 MX 29AK<br /> Lower: 393773 MX 14AK<br /><br />This is the best group on the net. Thanks...

Re: Carb Kits and Tag ID question

Haycord.... The carburetor kits are identical. However, I have no idea what a kit #7046V is but I would suspect it has something to do with Sierra's carb kit #18-7046 which is okay.<br /><br />The tag numbers vary due to the mechanical linkage setup, and sometimes due to jet sizes.<br /><br />The OMC original, superceeded, and present part number would for the carb kit would be 392550 (original #), 398526, 434888, and 439076 (last and present number that I'm aware of).

Thanks Joe, I'm not sure the brand of the kit, I actually got the part-number from a commonly referenced suppliers site. Really I would rather use oem parts but in the archives I found it advised to use Viton, is it really necessary?

I have no idea what a Viton is but no, it's not necessary to be used whatever it is. Check with you local NAPA store, taking along the OMC numbers I listed previously, and of course keeping in mind the year and hp engine you have. They'll be able to fix you up I'm sure at a most reasonable cost.

Viton is a material that replaces rubber and is used for seals. It is more resistant to chemicals, heat, etc. and doesn't take a set as bad. It is an overall superior material to use for seals. I rebuilt an old T4 VW engine a few years ago and upgraded to viton o-rings for the pushrod tubes..very flexible and springy compared to the stock rubber ones.

I appreciate the info Bill. I know that the float needle valve tips are of a new substance that works well with methenol, alcohol, etc but I wasn't aware of what it was called. To my knowledge, all of the float needle valve tips include this material in the manufactured carburetor kits in todays age. Thanks for the info update.

When you rebuild 1985 XP 150 carbs, should the welch plugs be removed for a complete cleaning or is that just hype?

For general cleaning and soaking for dried fuel deposits, normally you do not have to remove the core plugs. If there is grit, dirt, debris, etc., then it's best to remove them for a thorough job.

Just a little added info....the Viton gaskets are a brownish red color as compared to the old black ones.

Does anyone know when they started using viton in omcs? Do they have viton gasket kits for 1950-1960s omc engines?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Bill P.
