( bowing to the mighty guru ) hi joe, i am going to be working on a 1964 evinrude starflight, 90 h.p., model 90493S. this mtor was running, but then would not start. it has sat now for about two years or so. i have a service manual available, so i will not be completely blind, but i have never worked on a motor of this size before, so, i would like to be able to ask you on this unit from time to time, if i may. i have read quite a few of your posts, and recognize and value your expertise with these engines. i would appreciate your help on this, and do you have any particular do / do nots i should be aware of ?
Ed

dummy me !! i forgot to mention that the owner stated that he had this engine checked by a service shop ( which i have dealt with and disdain ) and was told the carb was junk, and that there was no help for it.

There's plenty of Do NOTs as well as DOs. Just state what the problem is when you run ito it.

mred 2436

If the motor has sat for 2 years, You definetly need to: Check the compression, Check for spark on all cylinders, Rebuild the carbs and clean them well, change the lower unit fluid and look for water intrusion(Milky Fluid). What did the mechanic say about the carb, that lead him to believe it was junk. Carbs don't just "Junk Out" as a general rule, unless a critical piece broke off or is missing. More info please..

joe and rick: thanks for the replies! joe...do you happen to know where i can locate a rebuild kit for the carb on this motor, and is this a single four barrel? i am finishing up one project now...and i will be starting on this motor in about two weeks. i'm just trying to gather as much info now....so i will spend more time getting this unit done...and less time searching for parts ( hopefully ) again many thanks for your time fellahs !

Mred.... A carburetor kit never existed for that model, and unfortunately many parts, gaskets etc are no longer available. However, contact me at my address (below) and I'll see what I have left in my remaining stock that would apply.
