carb cleaning question 40hp 4 cylinder mariner

Is it best to fully remove the carbs for cleaning? Looks like I can remove the float,
and disassemble from the side without fully removing them.

The idle isn't very smooth, dies after idling a few minutes.

i would recommend you squeeze primer bulb for the few minutes that it takes to normally die and see if it still dies. My gut instinct is telling me fuel pump issue as the crank case pulses are much lower at idle and poor fuel pump performance shows here sometimes. Besides this is a free check :)

as fas as cleaning goes... i would think it very difficult to be assured of clean jets without removing carbs and complete tear down...so that you can actually look through the jets and assure that carb cleaner shoots through them nicely. Myself i use an $80 harbor freight heated ultrasonic cleaner and dawn dishsoap and set it to run for about an hr... sometimes 2 with all the carb parts in it. Don't use purple power simple green ect... as most of them will happily eat aluminum. if i have a particularly nasty carb that doesn't clean up well this way i use the green antifreeze in the ultrasonic on high heat and let it set overnight... a crock pot works too but you can never use it for food afterwords. the crock pot and antifreeze method will make your carb look like new as far as clean with an overnight soak on low setting... but will not remove oxidation from the aluminum.

I prefer the ultrasonic...
That said judicious use of carb cleaner and a full disassembly works well too.

If you find that sqeezing the primer bulb stops it from dieing then either fuel pump or fuel hose or fuel filter, can be an air leak or blockage.

oh... and if you remove carbs ect.... strongly suggest new gaskets for them, cheap insurance against air leaks in the future.

one thing...the fuel lines are all secured with zip ties..i asked and was told thats normal..i did replace the fuel lines but i find they leak when bulbed with good pressure. im going to put hose clamps on.

Rebel;

Good move, sometimes with zip ties, they fold the hose and create small gaps where air can get in or fuel leak out.

I cleaned the carbs (was'nt too hard to do), replaced all hoses, used clamps instead of zip ties.

It runs dramatically smoother, it's the first time to hear
a 4 cylinder run good, much smoother than a 2 cylinder.
About like a 4 cylinder small truck engine.

Tried to find a new fuel line to engine fuel line fitting for my 1990 mariner 40hp.
Apparently not easy to find, i will try a salvage yard or something.

still idles ok for awhile and dies...but stays running if i squeeze the bulb. Hard to pinpoint the leaks theres more than one..so Onercboater is right.

Feels like the lower float bowl is leaking at the gasket, gets wet there first before leaks above get there.

anyway, from here out you get a video if i have a problem.

saw today the lower carb spits gas, blows smoke. the upper carb sucks like it should.

this is right after pumping the fuel bulb ...it now gets very tight..leaks fixed.

but noticed after it runs a minute there is leaked fuel again.

Just remove and rebuild the carbs and pump with the correct Merc gasket kit, and quit screwing around.

The lower carb spits gas and blows out steadily..
I'm new to boat motors but sounds like reed valve to me.

I will recheck compression to rule out valves/rings tonight but was fine recently.

Did order gaskets, i have no leaks with engine off, bulb pumps tight, which means float valves work right?...but soon as the motor warms up it does leak, must be at float gaskets, cant really tell.

compression = 90 psi all 4 cylinders.

has to be a bad reed valve right?

lower carb spits gas and blows out.

I'm Just guessing? that you don't have an OEM MERC SERVICE/REPAIR Manual?

...i have the online one, not seloc.

it says replace the reed valve if a carb is blowing out.

this is beyond.."go get a gasket kit".

weird thing is the reed valve prob just started and is an add to the already existing problems.
