I have a 95 4.3LX with the Weber 4bb. What choices are there to use other carbs wit the same intake manifold? I'd like to convert to a Rochester Quadrajet, but not sure what mods I will need to do. The throttle and fuel are on the correct sides and I even think the arrestor diameter is the same...just not sure about the intake manifold. I thought about rebuilding the Weber but I'm not crazy about the manifold choke and I hear that even after rebuild they tend to still have starting problems.

She starts fine when cold, two full-throttle pumps and she fires right up. I have to hold a fast idle since the choke is not working but she runs fine after that. The problem is starting after sitting for a while. If I shut her down and wait a few minutes, she'll fire back up. Anything more than that and she won't start unless I hold the throttle to full and crank. It seems to me she is getting flooded and the carb is somehow leaking all the fuel into the intake.

Re: Carb Choices

Verify what you think is happening is actually happening. It may be as simple as a needle/seat issue or float level adjustment. Could be heat perculation.

I would clean, rebuild, and adjust the weber, and possibly change it over to electric choke. If you replace, an Edelbrock 1409 w/4.3L kit would be the best starting point.

This boat sat in a garage for a long time. It's a 95 but looks new. I can see a bit of rust in the plates of the carb. It runs like a bat out of hel, I can't even give it full throttle with a 14.25x21 blade since it will over RPM. Only problem is starting it. I would love to change over to electric choke but don't see where I could mount it since this one is manifold choke. I got the choke to sort of function...had to reshape the links from the choke coil since someone monked them up. The coil itself needs to be replaced since it's missing the cover and it's not heating up properly. Also, when choke is fully closed, the RPMS are not going up. I think I'm going to have to rebuild this carb. What is the kit p/n for this carb? I looked around and can't seem to figure out the correct p/n. I think it's 823728

Re: Carb Choices

Being you are in FL, you probably could get by without a choke. Might need a few extra pumps or a 2nd start attempt during cold start. Here in NY, I basicly have a manual choke. I have a small wire that holds choke wide open. Before cold start, I alway have engine lid up, remove wire and choke plate closes to specificed gap. Start-it up, and within 5 minutes, put the wire back in place. A quick inspection and close hatch.

Using you engine serial number and merc carb part number, you should be able to find the correct kit. There are aftermarket kits, and believe edelbrock has some that fit, too. When I looked at: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...g&inbr=1599&bnbr=100&bdesc=CARBURETOR+(WEBER) the kit part number matched what you posted.

What seems to be the problem? It is extremely common to have to use near or full throttle on a warm engine after sitting (known as a hot soak); it is the nature of the beasts known as carburetors.
