I have a 1990 rude 200xp looper. I just aquired a 1987 225 johnson looper. I'm told that the engines are the same except for the pistons. the 200 is a big bore and the 225 is a small bore.I was wondering if I could change carbs ,reeds etc. from the 225 and put them on the 200. since the 200 has been bored out .030 over and has only 40 hours on the rebuild. then the 200 would be a 225. Any suggestions on this theory? Could the 225 be saved for parts for the 200, crank, rods etc?

Re: carb change out

im only responding cause no one else hhas and i know the situation you face. to keep or not. if they are of the same family as in 90 degree vs 60 degree looper <not sure of yrs for 60 dr> yes i would say most if not all parts will interchange. carbs jets and reeds will be different. i bought what was supposed to be a 92 120 looper and have yet to figure out what it is. but know what its not. have eliminated 94, 93, 92, 91, 90. the only thing the local shops here are doing is taking money. what im trying to say is mixing parts isnt good unless you absolutly have too. i know i hhave a set of 85 140 carb which are different than a set of 90 120 carbs that i was going to buy. as in throat and jet size. my advice is to get an omc part manual for each motor and compare numbers before you start swapping.keep a record for the next guy.

Re: carb change out

Save everything!! Even the 2.7 block can be bored to 3.0 liter. The crank, rods etc will work.

The heads are different but if you want to use premimum fuel you can make a 3 liter come alive with 2.7 liter heads. But thats another story.

The mid section, trim and gearcase can be used.

The carb assemblys can be interchanged. Will you see a difference? It depends on your hull type. If it responds well to small torque increases then yes. If you are not maxed out with your 200 on set up you may not see any difference.

Good find!

Is the 200 loooper a 3.0 liter? I know that OMC went to the bigger bore in 88'. So in theory the 225 carbs on the 200 is the way to go ?
