I have a 75 85 hp johnson. After inspecting the carbs i noticed the butterflys were only opening about 75% of the way and wondering how to get to wot without messing up the timing. the motor seems to be reving plenty high but the boat is way under proped. when i adjust the linkage i change the idle speed. any help would be great thanks. 15 ft bass boat running 38 gps but gets there in two seconds add two people and same result top speed 38 in under 3 seconds. it has 17 pitch now thinking of going with 23 pitch. no idea what rpm im turning probably to much

Search "Link and Sync" everything is tied together on a baot so if you change something to get wot you change things at idle to, alinc and sync will get everything lined up.

Aslo search Joe Reeves timing, it is a way to set timing that doesn't require you to actually run the engine wide open.

You may just need to readjust the throttle cable. Disconnect the cable at the engine end. Move the spark advance lever by hand. If the butterflys open fully by hand-then the cable probably needs to be adjusted. Use the adjuster knob at the engine cable end.

Unscrew the large screw on the spark advance lever. That should reduce your idle timing. The idle is set by timing, not by carb adjustment. If that does not do it, you may still have a minor throttle cable adjustment issue. The carb roller should not be touching the cam when at idle-you should be able to slip a pc of paper between at idle.
