I just rebuilt a 9.8 merc using a new kit.I soaked the carb in an untrasonic cleaned and rebuilt it and now I cannot seem to adjust the carb correctly.
When I start the motor it does not run well well.I attempted to adjust the carb using the only adjustment screw on the carb. The motor kicks and I cannot get rid of the kick by adjusting the carb. The kick just moves around as I adjust the carb, either it kicks slow or fast as I adjust.I cannot figure this out.Whats wrong?
Does anyone know a source for information about these small merc carbs that I could use as a resource ?

If the kicking your speaking of is a backfire ( or farting sound) the motor is lean on idle adjustment. If it was not there before then it something you did and you need to redo the cleaning and blow the carb passages out. If it was there before then you may have a ign. system failure

Not sure of the year, but I am guessing 1970's,There is no plate with Sr # or Mod #,as it has been removed.
I discovered an air leak at the tank fitting, and I replaced the tank and hose. That made a huge inpact on the idle, and the kicking stopped.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Carb Adjustment 9.8

I'm back.
The darn thing will run for 15 minutes in the tank and than all of a sudden it starts to kick and than dies.

I have had tha carb apart 3 times, replaced the tank, hose, fitting on both ends, and still it will not stay running.

When I spray carb cleaner around the fuel pump on the carb it starts to break up.I had that apart 3 times as well. The gaskets are fine and the 4 screws are tight. The diaphram is new and in fact I have also changed that.
I do not know where to go next.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Carb Adjustment 9.8

I just went through a similar situation myself with my 9.8 After rebuilding the carb I couldn't get the mixture right no matter what I tried even though it ran fine before the rebuild. As it turned out, the fuel pump needed to be rebuilt as well. I guess some debris got into it while the carb was pulled.
