Re: Caravelle boats?

A caravel is a small, highly maneuverable sailing ship developed in the 15th century by the Portuguese to explore along the West African coast and into the Atlantic Ocean. The lateen sails gave her speed and the capacity for sailing to windward (beating). Caravels were much used by the Portuguese for the oceanic exploration voyages during the 15th and 16th centuries in the age of discovery. :)

If you are talking Caravelle power boats, which I know you are, from the mid 90's to now the 100% wood-free construction is a bonus and they are well known for their hull design and shape. They got wiped out by a storm/poor management/poor economy a few years ago but are back now. I had a '89 Caravelle Elegante with the mercruiser and it was a better handling boat than my father's 2001 Stingray.

Take a look here and read the posts which would apply to the boat you are looking at.

Re: Caravelle boats?

Back in 1972 I bought (new) an 18' Caravelle FG tri-hull bow rider OB. For a tri-hull the center hull was of a deep V design with lifting strakes and all. Not sure it would be a trihedral which some hulls were referred to as being. The dead rise continued to the stern. The boat was heavy.....lots of glass and resin.

The combination made for an extremely dry and soft ride, unlike a tri-hull I bought a year earller that didn't have the niceties I mentioned.

Workmanship was excellent and I never had a problem with the boat in the roughly 7 years I had it. I sold it to a fellow worker and he used it down on the Intercoastal Canal bordering the Gulf of Mexico to run 40 miles to his fishing camp.

I think they were built in Arkansas.

I got into some rocks once and chipped the turquoise gel coat. A request to the factory and a few bucks and I had a repair kit and fixed the gouge. Color matched perfectly.

I sold it because the family was growing out of water sports and I wanted a bass boat.

Best I can do.
