Living up here in snowy Rochester, NY cars that were owned in the South, (states that were formerly part the Confederate States of America) are liked more, because of the lack of salt used to melt snow. I was looking at a vehicle with a friend, which was listed as a "southern car" and according to Carfax, the dealer gave us, it was from PA. I know PA is south of NY, but I really don't consider it part of the "south".

I'm as southern PA as you can get and we still salt plenty. Probably even more so nowadays with all this "pre-treating" of the roads that goes on. Granted we're a heck of a lot less rusty than Pittsburgh or Erie.

I hate hearing stories like this. I've been a used car dealer for 25 yrs. and most of my business comes from "word of mouth".

Thank goodness for Carfax. :)

You want a true southern car....... travel south ........ first by internet....then by air and drive back........ with a nice southern car.

The dealer did not deliberately lie about the car but probably got it confused....... hey PA is south to me too. Car's from CT look fantastic compared to VT cars and CT is not south.

Be very carefull about buying a car from the south, could have been submerged in a flood, check inside the door panels if possible.

Minnesota uses plenty of salt/sand on the roads, and even so, it's very rare for vehicles to corrode anymore. Back in the 70's and maybe the 80's and prior, you saw plenty of cars with rocker panel and fender cancer. Hardly ever see it anymore. Vehicles are much more corrosion resistant now, to the point I'd not even care about the once prized "Arizona" cars.

You can't get more rust free than Arizona. I still see Chev. Vegas, from time to time. You could HEAR those rust in Michigan.;)

About ten years ago, my son bought a 1981 Camaro. Those were as bad as Vegas for rust. We rebuilt the car, from the gound up, and did not break a single bolt. There was not a spot of rust on it-anywhere. Plenty of dents but NO rust.

We sold it to a guy in Wisconsin that was AMAZED.

I'm with your, Swabber. I was in the car industry the first 30 years of my life ... till I left it (sort of, still dabble a little) 20 years ago. Some used car dealers give all a bad name. One of my favorite lines has been, "Trust me, I sell used cars.";):D

Just goes to show you carfax is not trust worthy. I think its more of a sales tool than any thing else.. Any time you buy a car let your own eyes tell you what you are buying not a salesman or some carfax crap.

Carfax sucks. A friend of mine had a Volvo C70 convertible. They wrecked it pretty bad (one time REAL bad) twice and had it repaired completely above board through insurance. The car was never right after the second time. They decided to trade it. CarMax, who they sold it to, ran a CarFax. Came back clean.

Well in this instance the Carfax showed the dealers hands. We went anyway to check it out. It wasn't that great, so the search continues.

The BEST thing about a Vega was that it rusted to death quickly, thus sparing the owner additional years of frustration in repairs. One of the worst cars ever, certainly in the top 20! Mine had the mis fortune of being equipped with the THD350 Auto Tranny, and A/C! Talk about power robbing- turning on the A/C would cause the car to go about 10 mph or more slower!
Too many horrible memories with that car...................
