Hi all,

I need some help wiring up a trailer.

My car has 5 wires:
Code:
Yellow=Left Turn
Brown=Parking Lamps
Light Blue=Stop Lamp
Black=Ground
Dark Green=Right Turn
Trailer has 4 wires
Code:
Green=right turn & stop
Yellow=Left turn & Stop
Brown=Tail lights
White=Ground
I went to an auto parts store and they told me it would be like $60 for an adaptor.

Thank you.

-Jay

Go here with your year, make, model and figure out what you need. I'm assuming you don't have any trailer connector on your vehicle now.

www.etrailer.com

Ya this is where I got my hitch. I was looking for something I could do this weekend though. I need to move a boat this weekend and can't wait for the item to ship.

-Jay

Most auto parts stores, plus Wallyworld, have adapters to operate 4 wire trailers from 5 wire sources.

No way would they be $60. More like $6. A 7 wire to 4 wire adapter for my ML was only $12.95

Good luck. :)

Most of the relay modules I have seen run from 29.95 to 39.95 at the big chain auto parts stores.

I like plug in adaptors so I can remove it and use different trailer connectors as needed.

Could be $40 or $60. Trucks & SUVs have trailer wiring built in to the harness so a $12 or so adapter is all you need, but most cars & minivans don't, so you need an adaptor that has circuitry to prevent feedback voltage from screwing things up when you split the light blue wire & combine it with the green and the yellow wires.

Or so I was led to believe when I wanted to wire the wife's minivan. But the shop that installed the hitch didn't charge nearly that much for wiring, so they must know something we don't.

It was just a local truck accessory shop - maybe you could find one in your neighborhood & call or drop by. Might find somebody there who could describe it for you. I won't have time to look at it & figure it out in time for this weekend.

good luck, & welcome to iboats.

If time is of the essence check your laws concerning lights and trailers

Here in NC IF you can see the lights of the tow vehicle then you do NOT need lights on your trailer.

In PA you did not need lights IF you could see the tow vehicles lights AND it was daytime at night you needed lights either way.

Either way I have lights on my trailers even though you can see the tow vehicle I just feel it is safer that way.

But if I was just going a short distance during the day during off peak traffic time then
I might chance it

You could always buy the proper lights and attach them temporarily they should be cheaper than $60 as well. Adapt the lights to your vehicle if this is going to be a permanent setup.
