That would have been funny to see from the air, I fly over the island all the time. :) (cussing at all the people down there having fun in boats!)

I've always be concerned with something like that, happening to me, while out boating alone.
Glad he's okay...wonder how bad the boat damage is?

I guess maybe next time he will stop the boat before checking for lobster traps

Kill switch wouldnt have helped him either.....unless it was 10ft long. A little common sense is good, especialy when boating alone.

Keep your eyes out for a new member posting in the boat restoration section. Look for a name like "autopilot".

Yes, yes, alden . . . :D

As far as the stupid part, I could easily do that . . . There may have even been a down station on that boat. Ya know, operating from the cockpit. You are scanning the close proximity for traps and hear something change with the engine (there is a note there that he thought he had fouled on one of the traps). Anyway, you lean over for a second and, wham, rogue wave. I've seen and rode over one on a charter boat out of Oxnard here. They could catch anybody

Of course you could simply never, ever leave the helm, but in an open sea with the autopilot on . . . What's weird is he said that the boat circled him a couple of times and then went straight. Maybe one of the props was fouled and the boat circled and then it broke free and the auto pilot could control it again. Heads straight for the island.

The weirdest part? He is rescued by his brother

I believe there is a cordless water-activated kill switch on the market now. No reason why you couldn't have a cordless switch that's tripped by distance.

There is more in the paper this morning. Apparently it was a 65 footer and he was not heading to the Island, so the autopilot thing makes no sense. He should have been heading ESE and the Island was almost due South. It sounds like the boat headed to the Island completely on its own and that's what saved his life. Many little things conspired to save this guy's life . . .

Latest on Captain-less boat story
