Canvas Cover preservation

I just picked up the pontoon in my sig. pontoon. The previous owner had a custom canvas cover made for it some time ago. He had done his best to keep it up by lubing the snaps and reinforcing it from underneath when the cover contacts any hard spots.

Anyway, the canvas still seems to be in fairly good shape and I'd like to keep it that way.

Can anyone tell me if there are treatments for the canvas to keep it from breaking down from UV rays and other hazards?

thanks.

Re: Canvas Cover preservation

Gently clean it with a soft brush and soap/water. Put it in a tub of water with fabric softner occasionally to keep it soft and flexible. Allow it to air dry off of the boat with plently of air circulation. Keep the water repellancy by using 303 protectant or Camp Dry. 303 is more expensive, but worth it. Camp dry is cheaper (available at Wal Mart) but won't last as long. Get any minor rips or dmamged areas taken care of immediately so they don't spread.

Keeping the dirt off of it is the best way to keep it supple. If it gets too dirtry for too long, the canvas becomes brittle (it can't breathe) and cracks & tears easily.

This is from your local upholsterer.
